Concussion Rates in High School Athletes vary by Gender and Sport – Learn More from Louisville Orthopedic Physician

Research by Marar and colleagues (2012) published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine looked at the incidence of concussions among athletes in 20 sports during the 2008 to 2010 time span.

The research found that compared to other sports football players suffered the highest number of concussions. Out of the 1,936 concussions reported, approximately 912 were from football related injuries or 47.1%. When looking at gender-comparable sports, girls had a higher rate of concussion than boys.  Following a concussion, most athletes were able to get back to sports participation within 3 weeks.  For more information on this research, see https://ajs.sagepub.com/content/40/4/747.short
