Therapeutic exercise is often recommended to cut down on osteoarthritis pain. With all the different kinds of exercise, what types are most appropriate for people with osteoarthritis pain? Medical researchers analyzed data from sixty different medical trials which included 8,218 people. Physical activity was categorized in three different ways:
1. Strength building
2. Flexibility
3. Aerobic exercise
Strength building includes things like weight lifting, resistance training, and other physical activities designed to build muscle. Strength training helps to build up your strength while also increasing your metabolism.
Flexibility-based exercises include things like yoga and stretching activities designed to increase performance by improving muscle elasticity and tone, range of motion, and muscle control.
Sometimes called cardio exercise, aerobic activities include things like dancing, jogging, swimming, biking, and walking. The intensity of aerobic exercises varies considerably. Aerobic exercises help strengthen your muscles, improve circulation, and increase the number of red blood cells in your body.
Based on the research findings, strength building exercises combined with flexibility and aerobic activity were shown to have significant benefits for those suffering from osteoarthritis pain. The benefits of these types of physical activities were evident in terms of both functional outcomes and pain levels.
