May is National Osteoporosis Awareness Month. Around 9 million U.S. adults have osteoporosis and about 48 million are suffering from low bone mass, based on the latest research presented at the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Annual Meeting in Chicago. Kentucky orthopedic Dr. Stacie Grossfeld notes that suggestions to lower your risk for osteoporosis include making sure that your exercise routine includes exercises that strengthen your muscles and are weight-bearing.
Consuming healthy foods with plenty of calcium and vitamin D is also recommended. Foods that help with osteoporosis prevention include things like spinach and kale, sardines, mackerel, trout and salmon, soy beans, okra, egg yolks and yogurt. Read more information on osteoporosis prevention.
