PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma More Effective than Placebo, Based on 2013 Sports Medicine Research

Treatment of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is more effective than placebo for knee osteoarthritis: a prospective, double blind randomized trial

An excellent article written by Dr. Patel, et al was published in February, 2013, in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. The doctors reported that PRP helped to reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis better than a placebo of saline water.  (more…)

Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair Compared to Open Surgery

Researchers Walton and Murrell in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery recently published results from a 2+ year study comparing patients who had arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) with those undergoing open RCR. Results found that while pain measurements between the groups were similar, those with arthroscopic RCR experienced less extreme pain, lower rates of severe night pain, and higher levels of satisfaction with the condition of their shoulder than those who underwent open RCR.  Another benefit of arthroscopic RCR included faster recovery of range of motion and strength.

Louisville Orthopedic Provides Assistance at 2013 World Cyclocross Competition in Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville orthopedic Dr. Stacie Grossfeld is serving as an orthopedic doctor at the 2013 World Cyclocross Championships held in Louisville, Kentucky, January 29, 2013 through February 3, 2013.

This international cyclocross event, which includes professional athletes from all over the world, is taking place at Louisville’s Eva Bandman park in downtown Louisville along River Road. Strains and Sprains Top Dance Injuries in Young People 3 to 19 years

Scientists led by Roberts and colleagues (2012) from the Center for Injury Research and Policy in Columbus Ohio examined 16 years of data on dance-related injuries in young people ages 3 to 19 years. More than 113,000 young people were treated in emergency rooms in the U.S. for dance related injuries between 1991 and 2007.  (more…)

Orthopedic Physician Discusses Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) versus Platelet Poor Plasma: Which is Better?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is one of the hottest topic in orthobiologics that is currently being researched.  One area that PRP is being used clinically is to treat chronic tendon inflammation that advances into the condition of tendopathy.  Tendopathy is a condition where the tendon cell histology changes secondary to the chronic inflamation. If PRP is being used to treat a chronic tendinitis the last side effect that a person receiving treatment for tenditis would want to occur is inflammation that would actually worsen the tendinitis.  There has also been concern that PRP may actually stimulate scar tissue formation when used in treatment of cases of tendinopathy.
